I had a weird dream last night. I usually have about two zombie dreams a week, but this one was a little different.
The entire dream had a gray quality about it. It was never daylight, but never really pitch black. I don't really remember the beginning of the dream, but I know there was a crowd and a sense of urgency and that theme was kept throughout.
Midway through my dream I was at a school dance. My old high school gym. I was leaving the dance when I was overwhelmed with a bunch of dead people on their way inside. They looked terror stricken or miserable. One of the two. Either way they were dressed in formal attire and running, maybe gliding into the gym. They were all in a hurry except for one girl, who was staring at me while everyone else whirled by.
I asked, "Where are they going so fast?"
"To the dance. The world is ending and they're afraid to die."
It then occured to me that they were frantically trying to deny their own deaths. The girl was aware that she was dead. At this point I realized that she was beautiful and, noting her tremendously sad expression, asked her to go on a picnic. She hesitantly accepted and I took her cold, gray hand, not knowing what to expect, and we crossed a dim meadow under dark, swirling clouds to a flannel blanket and a basket of wine and cheese. The girl smiled a little and sat down. She was still sad though. To cheer her up I told her she was beautiful and that I would love her forever. She smiled again and said, "You say that now, but what about when my skin falls off?" In that very moment her skin dripped off her face and onto the blanket. She must have noticed the horror in my eyes as she quickly collected the missing pieces and pressed them back into place. Her eyes were wide and she grabbed my wrist. I then knew that I had accidentally promised a lonley dead girl my undying love. (HA! Dream me and real me are a lot alike). I then said, "Brandon. Get a bag." He appeared with a bag and we stuffed the dead girl in it. She kicked and screamed and made the bag almost impossible to carry home. I couldn't stand the high pitched squeals and animal like movements coming from the bag but I knew I couldn't let her out. I shoved her in the freezer to keep the stench of decay, which was suddenly and unexpectedly seeping from the bag, from stifling us. But then, three men came in and held guns to our heads. They searched the house and finally got to the freezer. He pulled her out and unzipped the bag. Stared a moment. Then they all three left at once. We were relieved on all fronts. No guns, no screaming dead girl. I examined her body. She was blue and shriveled, eyes open wide. I picked her up and Brandon grabbed a spade. We went out to the meadow and began to dig. All of a sudden it was bright and sunny and hot. Her body began to move. Noises came from her throat. "Very little time, very little time" I kept repeating. Finally the hole was dug. She was thawed enough to see and know that she had been betrayed and rejected. Her eyes were still wide and her mouth open. She didn't want to go into the hole and her expression was pitiful. I dropped her in.
Woke up.
